MINI Classic electric 2018 review
Image 1 of 12 Image 1 of 12 17 Jul, 2018 1:30pm Jonathan Burn The MINI Classic electric is a one-off take on a 20th century icon, as MINI gears up for a proper electric hatch in 2019 It’s no secret that MINI will launch an electric hatchback in 2019 and to fill the gap between now and the car landing in showrooms the British firm has created something rather unique. This is the Mini Classic electric, and as you may have guessed from the name, it’s a fully electric version of one of the world’s most iconic cars. First revealed at the New York motor show earlier this year and built by German engineer Moritz Burmester the model is a strict one-off, but Auto Express has been behind the wheel to see if it has the potential to be more than an effective marketing tool. • Best electric cars on sale 2018 It may be a 59 year old piece of design but time has been kind to the Mini; parked up alongside its modern day equivalent at MINI... Lexus boss hints at electrified F performance models

John McIlroy 2018-07-15 06:59 The next stage in the development of the Lexus F performance brand could be electrification, says president Yoshihiro Sawa Lexus may have to consider expanding its F performance sub-brand to include electrified powertrains as well as traditional petrol engines – and this could even extend to a bespoke F hybrid GT, the company’s president has revealed. Yoshihiro Sawa admits that creating a stronger emotional connection with buyers could be the next step in building Lexus’s position as a true rival to German premium manufacturers. And he says motorsport activities, such as Lexus’s GT3 sports car programme, and its F sub-brand can play key roles in this. • Best performance cars to buy now The F models to date – IS F, RC F and GS F – have all used petrol V8 power. But Sawa believes the division will have to embrace different powertrain choices in the coming years. And intriguingly, he suggested that one possibl... [more]

McLaren to release 18 new cars by 2025 under new Track25 plan

James Brodie 2018-07-12 17:54 McLaren's product offensive will see its entire line-up electrified and the arrival of a true P1 successor McLaren has revealed a new business plan at the 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed, with the British supercar firm promising it will launch 18 new models and derivatives by 2025 as part of a £1.2 billion investment.  Called Track25, the new plan is an expansion of the already established Track22 plan revealed at the Geneva motor show in 2016. That original strategy did not include scope for an Ultimate Series successor to the P1 hypercar, but Track25 makes it perfectly clear that a new flagship will happen.  • Best supercars on sale 2018 It’ll use a hybrid powertrain – McLaren says that its entire sports car and supercar line-up will be electrified before 2025 – and the company claims it is currently developing a lightweight, superfast-charging, high-power battery system for high performance vehicles. ... New McLaren P1 confirmed for 2025

Stuart Gallagher 12 Jul 2018 McLaren has confirmed it will launch a successor to its P1 hypercar by 2025 as it embarks on a revised strategy that will also see it produce 18 new models and derivatives, and nearly double sales before the middle of the next decade. The independent company will also only offer a petrol-electric-hybrid range of its next generation of Sports and Super Series by 2024. Speaking at the global debut of the new 600LT at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt presented an evolution of the company’s original Track 22 programme, presented at the Geneva motor show in 2016, confirming the new strategy consisting of the 18 new models or derivatives of existing cars (of which the 600LT is not one of them) launched between now and the end of 2025 and the switch to petrol-electric powertrains. > McLaren P1 review Track 25 will see McLaren invest a further £200million, on top of the £1billion already earmarked for Tra... Maserati Levante GTS revealed at Goodwood – look out Cayenne Turbo

Jordan Katsianis 12 Jul 2018 The Maserati Levante SUV has been crying out for a V8 engine since its initial release back in 2016, and now within just four months a second V8 model has been revealed. To sit in the range alongside the wild 581bhp Trofeo that was revealed at the New York motor show earlier this year, the new Levante GTS is a (slightly) milder V8-powered model, perfectly placed to take on the Porsche Cayenne Turbo, if Maserati decides to bring it to the UK. Compared to the Porsche, the Levante GTS’ figures are almost spookily close, sharing an identical power figure of 542bhp and only giving away 30lb ft of torque to the Porsche at 538lb ft. The two share a similar drivetrain, too, both driving all four wheels through an eight-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. > Click here for more on the Maserati Levante Trofeo Both the GTS and Trofeo feature the ‘V90’ architecture 3.9-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, developed and built i... Maserati Levante GTS revealed at Goodwood with 542bhp

James Brodie 2018-07-12 12:20 Another V8 powered version of Maserati's Levante has landed, but again, we probably won't get it in Britain Maserati has revealed a new version of its Levante SUV at the 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed called the Levante GTS. It’s another V8 powered version of the Italian brand’s Porsche Macan rival, and a sister car to the Levante Trofeo revealed earlier this year at the New York motor show. • Best SUVs on sale 2018 Like that car it makes use of a 3.8-litre twin turbo eight cylinder motor, though it produces a little less power - 542bhp compared to the Trofeo’s 590bhp. Peak torque of 730Nm is delivered between 2,500rpm and 5,000rpm, and power is sent to FCA’s Q4 all-wheel-drive system through an eight-speed ZF gearbox. Image 4 of 22 Image 4 of 22 From a performance perspective, Maserati claims that the Levante GTS will reel off the 0-62mph dash in 4.2 seconds, while top speed is pegged at 181mph.... [more]

Skoda to build performance electric models under eRS brand

Jordan Katsianis 10 Jul 2018 Skoda is to make a performance variant of its upcoming all-electric model, if recent reports are to be believed. Destined to go under eRS branding, the new models should share a similar combination of accessible performance and subtle styling upgrades, all underpinned by the VW group’s new MEB bespoke electric platform. Skoda’s first bespoke electric vehicle is to be based on the Vision E Concept from the 2017 Frankfurt motor show and should be on sale by the end of 2020. Sharing many core components with VW’s own I.D hatchback, it’s this model that is likely to be the first to feature the eRS branding. > Click here for our look at the Skoda Vision E Concept Speaking with our sister title Auto Express, Alain Favey, Skoda’s board member for sales and marketing, confirmed: ‘There will be electric versions of vRS – eRS. Skoda planning hot all-electric eRS models

Steve Fowler 2018-07-10 13:25 The new 2020 Skoda Vision E-based SUV to wear hot eRS badge Skoda’s history of producing hot RS versions of its mainstream models will spread into its future electric models, Auto Express can reveal.  The Czech firm’s first all-electric car will be a production version of the Vision E concept revealed at the 2017 Frankfurt motor show and due on sale at the end of 2020. It’ll be based on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB electric car platform alongside VW’s I.D. models. • Skoda Vision E concept review Speaking to Auto Express, Alain Favey, Skoda’s board member for sales and marketing, confirmed: “There will be electric versions of vRS – eRS. The logic is the same – it’s not about performance as such. Our most powerful engine is 245bhp so by any stretch of imagination we’re not talking about Ferrari.  “It’s about the experience and that’s something we can do very well in our future electric cars. Hybrid cars to be exempt from 2040 petrol and diesel ban

Move angers environmental campaigners but is welcomed by automotive industryPetrol and diesel hybrid cars will still be permitted to be sold in 2040, the government has conceded, in a move that has angered environmental campaigners but was welcomed by the car industry. Ministers last year pledged to ban new cars powered by fossil fuels by 2040 but the transport secretary, Chris Grayling, confirmed on Monday that hybrid cars – powered by electricity and diesel or petrol – would be exempt.
