UK to invest big in electric car battery research

It is hoped that the new investment under the Faraday Challenge programme will bring state-of-the-art EV batteries to market 2017-07-24 12:30 The Government has revealed plans to invest heavily in developing state-of-the-art batteries for electric vehicles. £246 million will be made available for firms to design, development and manufacture the latest battery technology for use in multiple industries, including cars, over four years. Known as the Faraday Challenge, named after the inventor of the electric motor, it is hoped the programme will bring cutting-edge EV batteries to market. The first phase will be a £45m competition, led by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), to create a virtual ‘Battery Institute’ to address the biggest challenges facing the fledgling battery industry.  Professor Philip Nelson, chief executive of the EPSRC, said: “Batteries will form a cornerstone of a low carbon economy, whether in cars, aircraft, ... Frankfurt debut for new Suzuki Swift Sport

Tom Wiltshire 24 Jul 2017 ‘Light, responsive, punchy and agile’ is how we described the standard Suzuki Swift when we reviewed it earlier this month. Four things that form the base for a great hot hatchback – and Suzuki has responded by announcing the new Swift Sport. It will debut at the Frankfurt motor show in September. The Swift Sport has always been somewhat of a hidden gem in Suzuki’s range, offering thrills on par with a larger hot hatchback, but at a low price point with rock-bottom running costs to match. Will the latest model continue this legacy? > Suzuki Swift review - more fun than a Fiesta? Signs are promising. The current Swift is a true featherweight, with the lightest versions clocking in at a svelte 890kg, and even the heaviest mild-hybrid 4x4 model still coming in at under a ton. We’d expect the new model to be similarly lightweight, which will bode well for the car’s handling and performance. Power will come courtesy of ... [more]

New Suzuki Swift Sport revealed ahead of full Frankfurt debut

First picture of Suzuki's all-new hot hatch confirms Frankfurt arrival for Fiesta ST Line rival 2017-07-24 10:34 Suzuki has revealed the first picture of its next hot hatchback – the all-new Swift Sport, which will make its full debut in the metal at the Frankfurt motor show in September. All the key details remain officially under wraps for now, so we’ll have to wait for official word from Suzuki for confirmation of the powertrain, price and sale date, but it should stay true to the previous generation car’s role of providing a junior hot hatch experience on a budget.  • Frankfurt motor show 2017: preview It will serve as a rival for the likes of the upcoming Volkswagen Up! GTI, while turbocharged, 1.0-litre, 138bhp versions of the new Ford Fiesta are also in the Swift Sport’s sights. We expect Suzuki to keep the Swift Sport broadly in line with the previous generation model by making use of a new engine providing a similar power output. As such, th... [more]

Best plug-in hybrid cars 2017

24 Jul, 2017 10:00am The plug-in hybrid market has grown exponentially in recent years. Here are our top 10 favourites Dean Gibson If you're after a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) in 2017, you're spoiled for choice. As more car makers join the ranks - firms such as BMW, Volvo, Porsche and Mercedes have now lined up alongside hybrid pioneers such as Toyota and Mitsubishi - the sheer variety of vehicles that now offer plug-in hybrid ability is growing all the time. They're proving popular for a number of reasons. As more makers join the fray, the price you pay for a plug-in vehicle is gradually coming down, and some credit for that can be given to the Government's Plug-In Car Grant. Then there are the tax implications, with many plug-ins offering far lower benefit-in-kind rates for company car users. Even better is the fact that this hybrid kit doesn't require you to compromise with everyday driving - all you need to do is remember to plug the car int... [more]

Charging an EV on the move: is dynamic wireless charging the future?

We hit the road to try out the revolutionary new tech that charges electric cars wirelessly as they’re driven 2017-07-20 12:40 There are many questions that electric cars still have to answer, but perhaps the biggest remains where and for how long must potential owners charge an EV? Estimates from the Government’s Go Ultra Low campaign suggest that up to 90 per cent of current EV charging takes place at home. That’s fine for those with a garage or a driveway, but won’t convince every motorist considering making the switch from a conventional car. And while the charging station infrastructure is growing, the time it takes to top up a battery is still obviously a worry. As it turns out, it may not be too long before we abandon plugs and charging cables altogether and look beneath the road surfaces for our next charge. Technology company Qualcomm has come up with a new way of wireless charging from beneath the roads at speeds of up to 70mph. It’s called dynam... [more]

The best cars for sale at RM Sotheby's Monterey auction

Louis Frankel 18 Jul 2017 RM Sotheby’s will host its annual Monterey auction between the 18th and 19th of August, and for once we can’t pick a single standout car. Instead, the lot list is sublime from start to finish and features a number of showstoppers. Every car is immaculately presented and the range of metal available is breath taking. From real driver’s cars to full on racing machines, plus exquisite exotics designed to turn heads – there’s the stuff of many a dream garage available at this auction. We’ve been through the auction catalogue and struggled to pick our favourites – but here they are. We can only guess at prices for now, as RM Sotheby’s has not yet released auction estimates. 1956 Aston Martin DBR1 Image 2 of 24 Image 2 of 24 When you think of sports car racing during the 1950s, you naturally think of Ferrari and Jaguar. However, Aston Martin is often forgotten and wrongfully so. This particular DBR1 was driven in pe... [more]

Best hybrid SUVs 2017

18 Jul, 2017 10:15am As hybrid power gains a foothold, the choice of electrically assisted SUVs and crossovers has grown Dean Gibson In the past, if you wanted a hybrid SUV, you could buy a Lexus, and that was about it. But in 2017, the number of hybrid SUVs for sale in the UK has grown, and the market is still getting bigger. The sheer variety on offer means there's bound to be a hybrid SUV for you, from compact models to full-size 7-seaters, you can get them all, and whether they're plug-in or a closed hybrid, they all deliver the kind of efficiency that can be on a par with diesel SUVs. The first hybrid SUV to go on sale in the UK was the Lexus RX 400h, which arrived in 2005. It featured a V6 petrol engine, battery pack and electric motor, and was very much like an enlarged, luxury adaptation of the Toyota Prius. The Lexus RX is still with us, and the fourth generation still very much relies on hybrid drive. The vast majority of hybrid SUVs on sale featu... [more]
