Mercedes announces UK diesel trade-in incentive scheme

Mercedes is offering Euro 1 to 4 diesel owners up to £2,000 off a new car until the end of the year 2017-08-16 12:30 Mercedes has announced a diesel trade-in scheme for UK customers, offering £2,000 off new Euro 6 compliant diesel cars for owners of older Euro 1 to 4 models when they trade in their vehicles. The scheme will be available until the 31st December 2017, and is a similar move to the one recently revealed by BMW.  • Mercedes announces £195m voluntary software tweak for 3 million diesel engines As the trade-in offer is open to any Euro 1 to 4 diesel car, most pre-2005 diesels are covered, as long as the owner trading it in has owned it for at least 6 months and it complies with the correct standards. Mild and plug-in hybrid cars are eligibile for the £2,000 subsidy alongside any existing government grants. For conventionally powered cars, only new Euro 6 diesel cars are offered with the saving, though. Mercedes sees clean diesel engines as a key pa... [more]

Electric cars are not the solution

If we really want to tackle particle pollution we need carbon-free electricity and, even better, walk or cycle over short distancesWill our streets be pollution free when the last petrol and diesel cars are sold in the UK in just over two decades time? Sadly not. This is for two main reasons. First, we will still have diesel lorries and buses. Second, electric cars still release particle pollution into the air from wearing tyres, brakes and road surfaces. Already more particle pollution comes from wear than from the exhausts of modern vehicles. Related: The polluting effect of wear and tear in brakes and tyres Continue reading...... [more]

The future of the automotive sector, Germany’s biggest exporter and provider of about 800,000 jobs, has become a hot election issue as politicians blame executives and each other for the industry’s battered reputation following the emissions scandal. Infiniti ‘retro prototype’ teased before debut at Pebble Beach

Jordan Katsianis 9 Aug 2017 Infiniti has released an intriguing teaser image of what it is calling a retro prototype, a one-off concept car to be shown on the lawns of the 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. With only the one image released, it is clear that the car has a long, fuselage-like body and a single central seat – just like period F1 cars from the 40s and 50s. In Infiniti’s words, the concept is meant to capture the ingenuity and adventure of early motor sports with the brand's contemporary ‘Powerful Elegance’ design language. Infiniti gives a clue as to the concept's intended method of propulsion by stating that this car has been developed through a fusion of modern EV technology and traditional craftsmanship. > Click here for our review of the Infiniti Q50 We will have to wait to see what form the concept actually takes, but it could provide a glimpse at the future of Infiniti design and, more specifically, the surfacing lan... Infiniti teases classic Formula 1 inspired concept for Pebble Beach

Infiniti will join Mercedes and BMW by pulling the wraps off a new concept car at Monterey car week, and it'll make use of advanced EV tech 2017-08-09 16:01 Infiniti has teased a new concept car that will make its debut in the metal at this year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, which takes place later this month in Monterey. Infiniti as a brand has only existed since 1989, but the firm promises it’ll be a “heritage inspired prototype vehicle”, and a nod to the kind of cars competing on the early motorsport scene. It will, however, also blend in elements of the brand’s contemporary design language. • Pebble Beach and Monterey car week Despite looking to the past for design inspiration, the technology under the skin will look firmly to the future – Infiniti promises that it’ll make use of “advanced EV technology”. A solitary teaser image has been revealed, hinting at some of the retro-futuristic styling Infiniti has penned for the as yet... [more]

Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio review

For: Terrific looks and Alfa badge, engaging ride and handling, Ferrari-fettled performanceOur Rating:  4 Against: High running costs, some flimsy interior trim, scarcity of Alfa Romeo dealers 2017 Alfa Romeo bursts back onto the performance scene with a genuinely convincing Mercedes-AMG and BMW M rival The Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio may be a follow-up to the 4C sports car, but it does a much more convincing job as a halo model for the brand. With more than 500bhp on tap, and handling that’s a match for class rivals like the BMW M3 or Mercedes-AMG C 63, the Quadrifoglio is the car that Alfa enthusiasts have been hankering after for years. Yes, it’s going to cost an arm and a leg to run, but with great looks and solid build quality to back up its stonking performance, there’s not really a lot to say against the Alfa if you’re in the market for a mid-size super saloon. The dealer network may have a little catching up to do if it’s going to match t... [more]
