New Mercedes CLA spied testing for a push upmarket

Jordan Katsianis 19 Jan 2018 Mercedes-Benz looks to be readying a new compact saloon-coupe for production, undergoing testing with production-ready bodywork and light units. But before you ask, this is not the upcoming A-class saloon, rather the new longer, lower CLA sibling. Due to Mercedes’ decision to build both a new A-class saloon and a CLA, the latter car will probably be larger than its predecessor, moving the model further upmarket and closer to cars like the A5 Sportback and 4-series Gran Coupe. Without a direct competitor in that segment of the market, Mercedes could see the new CLA as the car to fill a rare gap in its current range. > Click here for all the latest on the new Mercedes A-class Like the previous car, the new CLA won’t feature a rear-drive chassis, instead utilising the new A-class platform due to be shown off at the Geneva motor show in March. As a result, the new CLA is likely to include a predominately four-cylinder engin... [more]

Geneva Motor Show 2018: preview

2018-01-19 11:25 All the new cars and concepts we’re expecting to see when the 2018 Geneva motor show kicks off in March The Geneva International motor show gets under way once again in March where the world’s major car manufacturers will descend on the Swiss city to showcase their latest production cars and concepts.  Given current industry trends it’s likely that the focus of the show will be very much centred around autonomous technology and electric vehicles. But Geneva is also a hotspot for performance cars. The exotic brands that give other international shows a miss tend to put the Geneva motor show in their diary as an opportunity to wheel out their exciting new metal.  • Best new cars for 2018 The big reveals we’re expecting to see at Geneva this year include the new Audi A6, Kia’s Cee’d, the Mercedes A-Class, Toyota’s Supra and the Volkswagen Touareg but there’ll be a whole lot more new production cars and concepts when Geneva 20... Updated Skoda Fabia teased, but vRS still not on the cards

Jordan Katsianis 18 Jan 2018 Skoda has given us our first look at a facelifted Fabia due to be revealed at the 2018 Geneva motor show in March. The current Fabia hasn’t featured much in the pages of evo in recent years due to the lack of a vRS version, and that’s not likely to change any time soon according to Skoda.  The current Fabia was launched in 2014 and is based on the old PQ26 platform, an updated version of the same one that underpins the previous generation Ibiza and Polo. This new car will hold onto the platform, not moving onto the next generation MQB-A that has gone on to underpin the recently released Polo and Ibiza. > Click here for our review of the Volkswagen Polo GTI Built up instead as a design overhaul, changes to the 2018 Fabia will include new front and rear LED lighting units and a reshaped version of the Fabia’s slatted grille. Judging by the released sketch, the initial design looks typically modern Skoda with crisp surf... [more]

Facelifted Skoda Fabia teased ahead of Geneva Motor Show unveil

Dan Smith 2018-01-18 11:23 The new Skoda Fabia goes on sale to customers at the end of 2018 featuring new LED headlamps and ‘state-of-the-art’ tech Skoda has announced a revised Fabia hatchback is due to stand on the plinth at the upcoming Geneva motor show in March. The current Fabia has been on sale unaltered since 2014 and is in need of a refresh so Skoda has put its designers to work. The teaser sketch used to announce the revised car's approaching arrival shows a slightly revised front end with slimmer LED headlights similar to those on the Karoq crossover. • Best superminis to buy now Elsewhere it’s hard to tell the facelifted Fabia sketch apart from the current model. The same bonnet grooves and angles along the doors remain similar to the Fabia you can currently buy. Along with the hatchback, the Fabia estate model will also benefit from the new facelift tweaks. The Czech manufacturer claims that its revised Mk3 Fabia will also have L... [more]

Mercedes EQC electric SUV spied in production form

Lawrence Allan 2018-01-17 10:20 Merc's first all-electric EQ model is slated for production in 2019, but disguised prototypes are already hitting the road The first installment of Mercedes' all-electric EQ range has been spotted undergoing cold weather testing in disguise. The EQC, an electric SUV with a range of around 300 miles, is expected to debut in 2019. The first concept car for the German carmaker's EV and hybrid sub-brand, the EQ Concept, was shown at the Paris motor show back in 2016. The SUV is the first of ten pure electric Mercedes models slated to arrive before 2025, with the company registering various EQ-prefixed model names over the last few years. • Best electric cars on sale 2018 As the camouflaged prototype suggests, the production EQC's styling has been toned down a little for market release. But it still retains the unusually low stance for an SUV, necessary to keep a smooth aerodynamic profile to boost range. The imposin... [more]

Infiniti to release pure EV and new range-extender hybrids by 2021

James Brodie 2018-01-17 10:15 Infiniti boss expects more than half of global sales to be electrified in seven years' time Infiniti has announced plans for an electrified future at the Detroit motor show, confirming that a clutch of new electrified vehicles will be on sale early in the next decade.  Confirmed at the show by Nissan Chief Executive officer Hiroto Saikawa, the strategy presented by Nissan’s premium brand will see the firm go on the electric offensive with new hybrid vehicles and pure EVs.  • Detroit motor show 2018 round-up hybrid cars will make use of Nissan’s e-POWER technology, meaning that the firm’s hybrid options will in effect be range extenders, driven by electric motors and using small petrol engines to charge the batteries. Infiniti’s first all-electric vehicle will arrive in 2021, though no further details have arrived just yet. Infiniti revealed an all-electric concept car only last year, though not one hint... [more]

Electric Ferrari supercar is under consideration

Graham Hope 2018-01-16 22:17 Ferrari isn’t averse to the idea of an electric supercar to rival the new Tesla Roadster says boss Ferrari is investigating building an all-electric supercar, Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne has admitted. The flamboyant exec had already made waves at the Detroit motor show by confirming his brand’s controversial SUV will be ready by late 2019 or early 2020. But Marchionne admitted the brand still has some way to go before an EV will reach production. “Ferrari has looked at this forever and if there is an electric supercar to be built Ferrari will build it first,” he said at the Detroit motor show. • World's fastest electric cars The admission marks a significant turnaround from Marchionne, who said two years ago that a Ferrari without an internal combustion engine would be “an almost obscene concept”. Marchionne has watched Tesla’s development with interest. Elon Musk’s outfit recently announced a ne... [more]
