VW invests 34 billion euros in EVs and autonomous tech

Jonathan Burn 2017-11-17 18:35 Five-year investment plan will see bulk of 34 billion euros put towards electric vehicle development up to 2020 The VW Group has announced an investment of 34 billion euros for the development of electric cars, autonomous driving technology and mobility services up to 2022. The majority of that investment will be put towards new electric and hybrid vehicles, the company has said. By 2030 the VW Group claims that its entire product portfolio will be electrified; one in four of the company’s models will be dedicated electric vehicles.  • Best electric cars 2017 “We are reinventing the car,” said Matthias Müller, CEO of the VW Group. “We are, however, doing so without sidelining existing technologies and vehicle projects, since this is how we will earn our money for the foreseeable future.”  VW’s Zwickau plant in Germany will be adapted to be the dedicated site for production of Volkswagen’s ele... New Ford Fiesta Vignale 2017 review

Image 1 of 22 Image 1 of 22 17 Nov, 2017 5:00pm Lawrence Allan Is Ford’s luxurious Fiesta Vignale a worthy range flagship? We’ve driven one to find out As Britain’s roads become ever more crowded, the increasing draw of premium small cars isn’t surprising. After all, everybody wants a bit of luxury, but they don’t necessarily want to deal with the dimensions or running costs of an executive saloon or posh SUV. Ford is looking to capitalise on this with the new Fiesta Vignale. Positioned as the range flagship, Vignale versions of Ford’s Mondeo, Kuga and Edge are already available to buy. The supermini is next in line, and with next year’s set to gain a Vignale variant, too, it’s clear that Ford has high hopes for the luxury sub-brand. • Best small cars 2017 Like the other Vignales, the exterior theme for the Fiesta is lashings of chrome. It surrounds the foglamp units, side windows and bespoke satin-effect grille, ... [more]

Borgward ready for early 2018 launch in Europe

James Brodie 2017-11-17 14:30 Borgward's BX7 is ready to hit the German market early next year, with a right-hand-drive BX5 being considered for the UK Reborn German marque Borgward is preparing to launch in Europe, with the introduction of its largest car, the BX7, planned for the first quarter of 2018 in Germany and neighbouring countries. A right-hand drive version of the smaller BX5 is the “next step”, according to Tom Anliker, Borgward’s Vice-President of marketing. Asked if it could come to Britain to serve in the ultra-competitive compact SUV segment, Anliker said “Yes, we are thinking about the UK”. • Best SUVs and 4x4s At the Guangzhou motor show, the sportiest version of the BX7 – known as the BX7 TS - was centre stage for the firm. A European market launch for this variant of the company’s largest SUV is planned too, priced from around €44,000 (£39,300 approx). Image 3 of 5 Image 3 of 5 The BX7 itself has be... [more]

Chinese Wey SUV will hit Europe in 2020s

James Brodie 2017-11-17 13:40 Great Wall-owned Wey is eyeing European sales, with its first SUV due in the next five years Chinese SUV giant Great Wall is preparing to launch its premium Wey-badged sub-brand in Europe in the early 2020s, according to CEO Jens Steingraber. Speaking to Auto Express at the 2017 Guangzhou motor show, the brand’s chief executive confirmed the brand has ambitions to move west early in the next decade. However, it’ll be a while before the Wey marque lands in the UK, as the firm will initially focus on left-hand drive markets. • Best SUVs and 4x4s Great Wall’s luxury brand sounded out a potential European entry earlier this year at the 2017 Frankfurt motor show, attending the German exposition with the XEV plug-in hybrid SUV concept as its headline act. “The Frankfurt motor show was a surprising success for us”, explained Steingraber. “If you want to be in the premium segment you have to be a global player”... New Tesla Roadster revealed – 250mph and 0-60 in 1.9 seconds

Antony Ingram 17 Nov 2017 Electric car manufacturer Tesla has revealed the first images of its new Roadster model, alongside its long-proposed semi-truck commercial vehicle. A new Roadster has been expected for quite some time, with Tesla CEO and founder Elon Musk having suggested that once the brand had begun to produce more conventional cars in volume, the firm would replace the sports model that first built Tesla's reputation. But while the original Roadster was heavily based on the Lotus Elise platform, the new model looks rather more ambitious – and as we've come to expect from Tesla, boasts some spectacular on-paper performance figures. No power figure is quoted, and you can ignore Tesla's torque figure of over 7300lb ft, as it's a "wheel torque", multiplied by gearing and therefore not directly comparable to the crank torque (or motor torque) quoted by other manufacturers. Image 4 of 11 Image 4 of 11 More significant is that the Tesla deliver... [more]

New Subaru WRX STi due by 2020 with hybrid power

Richard Ingram 2017-11-16 18:19 Spiritual successor to Subaru’s WRC-winning Impreza rally car, the WRX STi will go hybrid by the end of the decade The next-generation Subaru WRX STi will make use of an all-new hybrid powertrain aimed at boosting performance and efficiency. It’ll sit on the same Global Platform (SGP) as the new Impreza and should launch by the end of the decade, Auto Express can reveal. Speaking from the European launch of the latest Impreza, UK marketing director Chris Hawken suggested hybrid tech was inevitable: “[SGP] has been designed to take hybrid and electric,” he told us. “That is the way STi is going.” • Best hybrid cars to buy now Hawken didn’t give any more detail on the forthcoming hybrid WRX STi, but it is likely to take much of its design inspiration from this year’s Viziv Performance Concept. That means a similar range of visual tweaks over the standard Impreza, including bigger wheels, an aggressive b... [more]

Lee Stern 16 Nov 2017 The City Concours car show will descend on the Honourable Artillery Company’s estate once again for two days, from June 7 to 8 2018. This second installment follows the inaugural event last year hosted in the heart of the capital. An increase on the 3500 visitors who attended this year’s event is also expected. Plans for the 2018 concours are underway, with categories dedicated to Le Mans victors and Land Speed Record holders listed as headline exhibits. There will also be the requisite collection of well kept classic, sports and supercars in attendance. The eclectic mix at last year's event catalogued over 100 years of the performance car. Toyota teases FT-AC concept ahead of LA Motor Show

Dan Smith 2017-11-16 16:25 The Future Toyota Adventure Concept (or FT-AC) is potentially an all-new SUV or pick-up set to be launched for the US market. Toyota has teased an extreme concept off-roader called the FT-AC, which the Japanese marque will fully unveil at this year's LA motor show.  FT-AC stands for ‘Future Toyota Adventure Concept’, with the name strongly hinting towards a rugged off-road SUV or pick-up truck. Auto Express understands that the FT-AC will be tailored for the North American audience, and there are currently no plans to showcase it in Europe.  • Best SUVs and 4x4s  From the darkened teaser image, the most notable features are the clusters of LED lights below the headlamps and on top of the windscreen. The wheelarches are quite large and seem to jut out from the side of the concept, too. Both of these characteristics point towards an all-conquering 4x4 that could potentially rival the Mercedes G-Class. Details of th... [more]

New Infiniti QX50 prototype review

Image 1 of 16 Image 1 of 16 16 Nov, 2017 2:30pm Thomas Geiger We go for an early drive in a prototype version of the new Infiniti QX50 SUV, featuring the brand's new variable-compression ratio engine Even more than a decade after launching in Europe, Infiniti, Nissan’s luxury brand, still lacks the reputation of its rivals. And as you have to have something special in order to compete against the Audi Q5, Mercedes GLC and Jaguar F-Pace, rather than brand appeal, Infiniti is focusing on technology with its new QX50 SUV. We’ve joined Infiniti’s development team to sample the QX50 ahead of its world debut at the LA motor show later this month, but more specifically we’re here to try its new variable-compression ratio engine. It’s a world first and will replace the 3.5-litre V6 of the outgoing model; it’s claimed to boost efficiency by about 25 percent while also increasing power and torque. Nissan and Infiniti refer to... [more]
