Europe could get Chinese cars

Jonathan Burn 2018-08-10 10:30 Bosses of Volkswagen and JLR predict models for the Chinese market will soon be sold in Europe Cars produced for the Chinese market could eventually be sold in Europe, according to senior figures from two of the continent’s largest makers. China has been the world’s largest new car market for a number of years; in 2017 around 28.8 million vehicles were sold in the country, and one in four new cars built globally last year was made there. • Chinese electric cars: the £47bn quest for supremacy Many of those cars, made by brands we know in Europe, are unique models for China. But that could change. Speaking exclusively to Auto Express, Volkswagen’s sales and marketing boss Jürgen Stackmann said: “You will see cars from us in the next two years that will only be sold in China, but people elsewhere will also want them. The market size allows us to come up with larger sub-segmentation compared to regions li... [more]

New Infiniti electric speedster concept teased for Pebble Beach

James Brodie 2018-08-10 10:10 Fresh Infiniti design study is the first project to be wholly overseen by former BMW designer Karim Habib Infiniti has confirmed it will reveal a new concept car at this year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, which the brand teases will signal its “performance intent” when it begins to produce electrified vehicles from 2021 onwards. A single teaser image for the new vehicle has been produced, though it hardly gives a hint as to what the fresh concept will look like. Taken at face value though, it reveals that the concept will be a single seat speedster style car, possibly featuring some retro-futuristic design elements. We can spot the seat in the image, complete with a four-point harness. • Best electric cars on sale 2018 That would tally with Infiniti’s Pebble Beach concept from last year. At Pebble Beach in 2017, Infiniti revealed the Prototype 9 concept, which was an all-electric single seater inspired ... [more]

New Lexus LC Limited Edition revealed ahead of Paris

Alex Ingram 2018-08-03 15:35 Special edition version of the Lexus LC features a unique paint finish and interior colour scheme, plus extra kit This is the Lexus LC Limited Edition. As the name suggests, it’s a special run version of the Japanese brand’s four-seat coupe, which features a unique colour scheme and gets some extra equipment. The most obvious feature of the Limited Edition is the Naples Yellow paint finish - a deeper shade than the Flare Yellow colour that’s offered across the LC range. • Lexus LC Structural Blue Edition revealed The Limited Edition is equipped with the LC’s Sport+ pack, which means it rides on 21-inch alloy wheels and features a carbon fibre roof. Further add-ons as part of the Sport+ pack include Lexus Dynamic Handling, four wheel steering, a Torsen limited-slip differential and an active rear spoiler which rises from the boot lid above 50mph. Tesla Model S 75D 2018 review

Image 1 of 20 Image 1 of 20 3 Aug, 2018 1:15pm Sam Naylor Is the entry-level Tesla Model S 75D the pick of the electric exec range? We find out... For anyone interested in electric cars, Tesla is just about the biggest talking point at the moment. The company has been grabbing headlines around the world, in part thanks to its non-conformist CEO Elon Musk. But if you’re actually going to buy a premium electric car, the Model S is bound to be on your list of options. It was among the first crop of EVs that genuinely appealed to mainstream buyers, and remains one of the best choices at the higher end of the market. So how does this 75D entry model fare? • Best electric cars on sale Most of the attention falls on the flagship P100D model, which is one of the fastest-accelerating cars you can buy. But at £123,050, its supercar-shaming abilities are diminished given that it costs as much as a McLaren. Image 2 of 20 Image 2 of 20 ... [more]

New Skoda Karoq Sportline revealed ahead of Paris Motor Show

James Brodie 2018-08-02 13:20 Skoda's smallest SUV offering gets Sportline styling and a new 2.0-litre petrol engine Skoda has revealed the new Karoq Sportline, following on from the debut of the tough looking Karoq Scout earlier this week. With the Karoq unlikely to gain a vRS variant, this is as sporty as things will get for Skoda’s Nissan Juke rival, and it’ll make its full debut alongside the new Scout variant at the Paris motor show in October. • Best crossovers on sale 2018 The Karoq Sportline rides on unique black 18-inch wheels, with 19-inch versions available on the options list. A bodykit similar to the one found on the Kodiaq Sport appears too, with fresh bumpers front and rear. The car’s bodywork paint contrasts with a grille, roof rails and wing mirrors finished in gloss black, and the windows are tinted too. In the cabin, the Sportline gains black sports seats upholstered in what Skoda says is a three-ply air-permeable fabr... [more]

New 2020 Skoda Octavia to get hybrid tech

James Brodie 2018-08-02 11:15 Bold all-new Skoda Octavia to lead the way as the Czech brand plans nine new models by 2021 The next three years could prove to be one of the most transformational periods in Skoda’s near-123-year history, as the Czech brand prepares up to nine new cars. Leading the charge will be a new version of the firm’s biggest nameplate of all: the fourth-generation Skoda Octavia, previewed in our exclusive main image. Although much of Skoda’s focus in recent times has been on expanding its SUV line-up, the Octavia remains its most important car and its true breadwinner. The Octavia has been part of Skoda’s range, on and off, since 1959, and last June the six-millionth example was built. • Best family cars on sale The current third-generation model is still fresh from a facelift, so the next car won’t arrive until early 2020. However, it will leap forward significantly from the current version, taking on a range of enh... [more]

Vauxhall GT X Experimental concept teased

Richard Ingram 2018-07-31 23:00 Vauxhall’s new concept car has been teased ahead of full reveal – previewing a ‘daring’ new design language for Vauxhall brand Vauxhall has teased its ‘daring’ new design language via a covered version of the forthcoming GT X Experimental concept car. Bosses say it embraces the brand’s core values – hinting towards a production model for the ‘mid-2020s’. The first image comes exactly one year after PSA Peugeot  Citroen bought Vauxhall and Opel outright. While it leaves a lot to the imagination, it gives us our best look yet at the firm’s a sharp front lighting design – a signature that will likely feature across the range in years to come. • Best electric cars to buy now The GT X Experimental doesn’t have a conventional grille, potentially hinting towards a fully-electric drivetrain. There’s no information on what form the concept will take, although the cleverly draped sheet suggests a s... [more]

Electric cars: a long way to go | Letters

John Armitt and Odd A Jakobsen respond to Adam Vaughan’s piece about electric carsAdam Vaughn’s experience of driving an electric vehicle (One Man and his Tesla, 27 July) demonstrates the real need we have for a truly national, visible network in this country if drivers are to confidently switch from petrol or diesel, which is a key recommendation of the UK’s first-ever National Infrastructure Assessment. We also make a key recommendation that government should place a requirement on local councils to work with charge point providers to allocate 5% of their parking spaces to electric vehicles by 2020, and 20% by 2025, which may be converted to electric vehicle charge points. New Skoda Karoq Scout breaks cover ahead of Paris Motor Show

James Brodie 2018-07-31 15:30 Skoda Karoq SUV gets the Scout treatment with three all-wheel-drive drivetrains and some off-road styling Skoda has confirmed a new member of the Karoq line-up is on the way in the form of the Karoq Scout – a tougher, more rugged version of its Nissan Qashqai rival, which will make its full debut at the Paris motor show in October. Joining Skoda’s Scout ranks alongside jacked up versions of the larger Kodiaq and the Octavia estate, the Karoq Scout features the same selection of tweaks and changes employed on those cars. • Best crossovers on sale 2018 As such, all-wheel-drive is standard on every Karoq Scout, and there are three powertrains to choose from. The sole petrol is the Volkswagen group’s 1.5-litre TSI option, producing 148bhp and sending drive to the all-wheel-drive system through a standard fit seven-speed DSG dual clutch automatic gearbox.
